Cocoa Powder Toothpaste

The primary function of flouride toothpaste is to remove buildup and remineralize the enamel on your teeth. That's great, but unfortunately the packaging isn't recyclable or reusable. For those who are interested in making their own toothpaste, you might be surprised to hear you can use cocoa powder as an ingredient!

Some health practitioners suggest that Theobromine, an active ingredient in cocoa powder, may act as a reasonable PH neutral alternative to flouride. Maybe it can work for you as well, but talk to your dentist before choosing to change your dental hygiene routine.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp Natural Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp bentonite clay (food grade, this acts as an abrasive)

Directions:

  1. Melt the coconut oil.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, baking soda, and bentonite clay; mix until combined completely.
  3. Continue stirring until the coconut oil has solidified to prevent separation.
  4. Store in a sealed glass jar in your refrigerator. Use a clean spoon to put the toothpaste on your toothbrush rather than dipping your toothbrush into the jar.
